Richard - Cheeky Monkey
Richard is the vocalist and acoustic guitarist for Space Monkey.
Richard started on his musical path aged 17. He entered the Birmingham "Write a hit" competition in 1980 with his first self-penned song "Electric Posers". He came runner up but was offered a recording contract by Horizon the very same day.
Following this, Richard had some success with Birmingham band Streetcar Dezire. They were the first ever band to play at Edwards Number 8, later to become the renowned venue for up and coming bands. They recorded the track "Mannequin" at the legendary Palm Studios owned by producer Bob Lamb (known for Duran Duran, UB40, and Tin Tin Duffy). They went on to support Gary Glitter at his sell out Birmingham concert and were offered a recording contract from Revolver Records.
Later, Richard formed and fronted Big Brother who went on to win the Lichfield Battle of the Bands competition with their Bowie influenced sound.
In 2010, Richard landed the role of George in the hit musical "The Wedding Singer" which ran at Birmingham's Old Rep.
Richard later started the record label Breakthrough Records. He wrote and released the single "Running through New York" which entered the lower part of the charts and was featured live on Radio WM (and is still available on Amazon. He was a regular DJ at the Bowie themed OAD club.
But these days, Richard enjoys nothing more than jumping up on stage with Space Monkey for a night of music and fun!
